28.7.1980: Zoos and Cinema 16
Thom Andersen’s, EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE, ZOOPRAXOGRAPHER (1975) portrays Muybridge, who wanted to make films before the technology existed. The second film in this program is MICROCULTURAL INCIDENTS IN TEN ZOOS (1971) by the sociologists Ray L. Birdwhistell and Jacques Von Vlack. This film print was a gift to the Arsenal by Amos Vogel who, like Jonas Mekas, fled from the Nazis to New York, where he founded the film society Cinema 16. Vogel had a unique perspective on programming: he combined experimental films with political films, newsreels or even educational films.
